From First Kicks to a Career in Football: The MGFA Pathway
For a young child arriving at their first football session, the future probably isn't something they're thinking about.
They want to kick a ball, score a goal, have fun and come back again next week.
But those first experiences of football can be the beginning of something much bigger.
At Martin Gray Football Academy, we’ve developed a pathway that can support young people through different stages of their football journey, from their first introduction to the game, through player development and education, and for some, all the way into employment within football and sport.

Where the Journey Begins
For some of our youngest players, the MGFA journey begins with Little Strikers.
At this stage, football should be exciting. Sessions introduce children to the ball, help them develop basic skills and coordination, and give them the opportunity to build confidence in a positive environment.
Nobody knows where that first session might eventually lead, and that's part of what makes grassroots football so special.
As children grow, Junior Strikers provides the next stage. Players continue developing their technique and understanding while becoming more confident with the ball and learning more about playing with others.
The emphasis remains on enjoyment, but as players develop, so does the football.
Taking Development Further
For young players who are ready for an additional challenge, MGFA Elite provides another step along the pathway.
The expectations increase and players are challenged technically, physically and mentally. Training looks at more than simply being able to perform a skill. Players are encouraged to think about their decisions, movement, positioning and understanding of the game.
It's about helping young footballers become more complete players.
Every young person will have different ambitions and develop at a different rate. The purpose of a pathway isn't to suggest everyone will reach the same destination. It's to make sure there is an opportunity to keep progressing when they're ready for the next challenge.
Combining Football and Education
As young people approach the end of school, the decisions become bigger.
For someone who has spent years passionate about football and sport, the idea of leaving that behind when they move into further education isn't particularly appealing.
That's where the MGFA BTEC programme, delivered through our partnership with Darlington College, becomes another important part of the pathway.
Students can continue their education while football remains a significant part of their college experience.
Regular training gives them the opportunity to continue developing as players, while their studies allow them to gain qualifications and begin exploring the different careers available within the sports industry.
It's an environment that asks students to take greater responsibility for their own development. They have to turn up, work hard, listen, communicate and continually look for ways to improve.
Those qualities matter on the football pitch, but they matter in the workplace too.
When the Pathway Becomes a Career
This is where the MGFA pathway becomes particularly rewarding for us.
A number of young people who have reached the BTEC stage of the programme have subsequently gained employment with MGFA.
They've gone from being young people learning and developing within our environment to becoming part of the team delivering opportunities for the next generation.
For us, that's something worth celebrating.
Football development isn't only about producing footballers. The game is a huge industry with careers in coaching, development, education and many other areas.
Giving young people the experience, confidence and skills to begin exploring those possibilities is an important part of what we want the MGFA pathway to achieve.
More Than a Football Session
When a three-year-old walks into Little Strikers for the first time, nobody is thinking about what they'll be doing ten or fifteen years later.
And they shouldn't be.
At that age, it should simply be about falling in love with playing football.
But as they grow, having somewhere to take that enthusiasm matters.
Little Strikers can lead to Junior Strikers. Junior Strikers can lead to further player development and MGFA Elite. As players get older, the BTEC programme can combine their passion for football with education. And for some, that journey can eventually create genuine employment opportunities.
That's what we mean when we talk about a pathway.
It isn't a promise that every young person will become a professional footballer. It's something much more realistic and valuable: the opportunity to keep learning, developing and discovering where football could take them.
Where Could Their Football Journey Lead?
Every journey has to begin somewhere.
Sometimes it's a first kick of a football at three years old. Sometimes it's a talented young player looking for their next challenge. Sometimes it's a teenager leaving school who knows they want a future in sport but hasn't decided exactly what that future looks like yet.
Wherever they are on that journey, MGFA is here to help them take the next step.
From Little Strikers to Junior Strikers, Elite, BTEC and even employment, we're proud to provide opportunities that can grow alongside the young people who join us.
Because the most exciting thing about taking that first step is that you never really know where it might lead.
